How to Be a Good ET in Rural Area

  How time flies! I have been a teacher for more than four months. As a green hand, I met a lot of problems and difficulties. When I became a student in a normal school, I tried to train myself to be a good teacher and I thought it was easy to be a good teacher. But when I stayed at school for several weeks, I realized that I was completely wrong. As the time went by, less and less kids felt like English lessons. I was so blue during the following days. I thought that hurt me. I was sad and depressed.
  Mr. Chan, the headmaster, found that there was something wrong with me. He came and talked to me. After he knew the reason of my depression, he said to me:“Hey, young man ,every green hand may have such experience as you did. And here are some advice for you.”
  First, be patient. He said. Our students are different from these in downtown. And what’s worse, the kids, who are somewhat clever, somewhat smart, and even somewhat rich, are sent to the school in downtown. Especially as an English teacher, you should be more patient. Cos most of the kids even don’t know ABC, though it is said that English is taught since Grade Four in primary school. But in fact, he stopped and looked at me. You know the truth, he went on
 Second, never lose passion. Like you, most of the new teachers are passionate for the job for only several weeks, and then they get tired of the kids, they get tired of the air at the school, and they get tired of the job. They think it is wrong to be a teacher. As they keep thinking like this, things become worse and worse. We must remember that it is not we like something that we do it, but to do something we fall in love with it.
  The third, be with strong personality. As a teacher, we should have our own personality and never hide it from the students so that we are not only a teacher but a person as well—and it comes through the lessons. Students like those guys who share their personality with their classes.
  The last one, be powerful. “Powerful” here means full of energy. We need to get up at six o’clock and go to bed at about ten. We stay with our kids for more than ten hours a day. We should keep doing like this. The more time we stay with the kids, the better everything will be.
If you always follow the four “p”s, to be or not to be a good teacher, that is not a problem. To you, that’s only a piece of cake. He smiled. I thought about his words, and then I smiled.
Now I can’t tell you that I am a good teacher, but I am more relaxing and happy than before.
